Vanessa: Unplugged! is Moving
Morninng, All! If you checked this blog yesterday it was really funky, huh? Nah, I didn't get hacked or anything like that, I'm moving it to a Tyepad format. The folks over at Six Apart have added a features that were the tipping point to make me switch back to Typepad. I'll blog more about that later.
I tried to move to WordPress but I needed to read way too much to make it work the way I want and I just don't have the time right now. I may make that move later because I like the WordPress templates better.
I was also able to get the domain mapping to work (finally) so my domain name no longer forwards but actually points to www.vanessabyers.net. I still need to tweak that a bit so it doesn't need the 'www', wish me luck.
Anyhoo, I'll keep the other Blogger blogs I author because I really like Blogger. It's so user-friendly, there are a number of great templates in the blogosphere and it's free. I'm shelling out $8.95 per month for Typepad but they now offer pages, interface better with Google, have a slew of widgets and I've always liked the ability to schedule your blog posting,
Scheduling blog posts is a big plus for me because I'm in my office from 8 AM to about 5 or 6 PM with little time to post during prime time. I'm thinking getting more of my posts in during prime time will get me more link luv, readers and ad revenue. I'll let you know how that works.
I hope to have everything in place --- widgets, photos and ads --- over the weekend between family, friends and a couple of cookouts over the Memorial Day weekend. In the meantime, let's not forget the reason for the holiday. A special thank you to all the men and women in the armed services who have bravely served the United States and many other countries.
Peace ~ Light ~ Love

Do you like funny pictures? Check out dailyfunnypics.com
Do you wonder where your friends get those funny pictures from that clog your mailbox everyday? Perhaps they visit http://dailyfunnypics.com/. I warn you in advance that some of the photos are risqué so if that bothers you, don’t go there. I get a kick out of the photos with kids and animals. The optical illusions are pretty cool too. Check out the site and let me know what you think.

American Idol Season 6 comes to an end; pray for Vonzell "Baby V" Solomon
I did not watch American Idol last night. I hope I didn’t miss Sanjaya’s hair or an earth-moving performance.
The final two contestants are cute but just okay performers. I don’t know a lot about Jordin or Blake except that she is only 17 and he is a bit unconventional as far as American Idol is concerned. One thing is certain, the winner will be announced on this season’s finale tonight and the AI media machine will continue its marketing phenomenon until Season 7. Speaking of AI, finalist number 3 from 2005, Vonzell “Baby V” Solomon was in the news because a fire caused extensive damage to her Ft. Myers, Florida home. It is reported that the fire was caused by electrical damage. The most disheartening part to this story is that Solomon‘s miniature poodle-spaniel mix puppy died in the fire. Prayers to V.

Oh, My Aching Back or I'm a Sunbeam Customer for Life! The power of Exceptional Customer Service
About six or seven months ago I hurt my back --- I mean really hurt my back. If you asked me how I did it, I really couldn’t tell you. All I know is that I was in such pain that I almost wanted to be put out of my misery. It didn’t matter how, just as long as it was quick. I know that doesn’t seem cool but that’s how I felt at the time.
I couldn’t sleep, sit up or lie down without practically coming to tears. I couldn’t even lift my legs or bend so bathing and getting dressed was horrible. Let’s not even think about using the facilities. Injuries from my early tomboy years, dance training and cheerleading did not compare to this.
After practically overdosing on Alleve pain reliever, a little Haitian rum and slathering on enough BenGay that the house smelled like a locker-room, I managed to make it to Walgreens to purchase a chair backpad massager. I’d seen one of those Shiatsu massagers by Homedics when I was there last week; there was one left. I bought it in spite of the $100 price tag. Pain will do that to you.
I also purchased a Sunbeam Flexible Heating Pad for my back and
I could use it on my right knee that still gives me problems from about six years ago when I stopped myself from falling down the stairs at FIU (Florida International University).
For two days, when I wasn’t getting massaged, I wore the heating pad. I felt good enough to force myself to work. I still couldn’t turn at the waist but I went to work anyway. The thought of the work piling up on my desk was enough for me to endure the pain. The back massaging chair pad became the hit of the office and other offices on the floor. Folks from other offices visited and even borrowed it from time to time.
Today, one of the secretaries was in such pain that I offered her to use my heating pad. I’d only used it two or three times. Lo and behold, the heating pad didn’t work There was an “F2” code on the heating control. After trying to make it work, I googled the Sunbeam Corporation and called the customer service number.
After waiting a few minutes to actually speak to a human, the young lady who answered was so polite and helpful. I told her how long ago I’d the item but I didn’t have the receipt. I know I didn’t register the item; it’s a heating pad for Christ’s sake. Anyhoo, she was able to determine that the item was still under warranty based on a control number I read off to her. She then told me that the problem was irreparable.
To my surprise, she asked for my name and mailing address. She told me I should receive a new unit within two to four weeks. No hassle. I asked her if I needed to return the old unit and she said no. I had to pinch myself.
I am now a Sunbeam customer for life. If that’s how they do business, that’s the kind of business for me. I shared my customer service experience with everyone in my office and now I’m sharing it with you. That’s the karma and impact of good customer service. Don’t forget that bad customer service travels even faster.

Thought for the Day: Leaving A Positive Footprint
Physical space acts like a sponge, absorbing the radiant of all who pass through it. And, more likely than not, the spaces we move through each day have seen many people come and go. We have no way of knowing whether the energy footprints left behind by those who preceded us will invigorate us or drain us. Yet we can control the energy footprint we leave behind for others. In blessing each space we enter, we orchestrate a subtle energy shift that affects not only our own experiences in that space but also the experiences of the individuals who will enter the space after us. While we may never see the effects our blessing has had, we can take comfort in the fact that we have provided grace for those that follow after us.
When you bless a room or an entire building, you leave a powerful message of love and light for all those who will come after you. Your blessings thus have myriad effects on the environments through which you pass. Old, stagnant energy is cleared, creating a vacuum into which fresh and invigorating energy can freely flow. The space is thus rendered harmonious and nourishing, and it becomes a hub from which positive feelings are transmitted. Intent is the key component of the blessings you leave in your physical wake. If your intent involves using your own consciousness as a tool for selflessly spreading grace, your blessings will never go awry. Whether you feel more comfortable performing a solo blessing or prefer to call upon your spirit guides for assistance, visualize each space you enter becoming free of toxins, chaos, and negativity as you speak your blessing. Then imagine the resultant emptiness being replaced by pure, healing white light and loving energy. Even a quic! k mindful thought of love can bless a space.
This type of blessing is cumulative and will grow each time you bestow it. Try blessing every home, business, and office you visit for an entire week and observing the effects of your goodwill. Your affirmative energy footprint will help brighten your day as you contemplate your blessing's future impact on your siblings in humanity and your environment. Tuesday, May 15, 2007
And now for something different...Intelligent Hip-Hop
"...granted we've known each other for some time, it don't take a whole day to recognize sunshine."
This song and "Come Close", also by Common, are two of the most beautiful hip-hop love songs ever. If you been on this blog trip with me for a minute, you now I'm a Common fan [yeah, even more than Robin Thicke]. I've been chill about the Common photos and videos, until now.
Without a doubt, Common is the best rapper of all time --- yeah, better than Pac and Biggie. I'll share a few of Common's lyrics from time to time. You might be surprised at the message in his lyrics. Until then, Peace and Smooches...

Deonte Bradley is a coward; Beating of 91 year-old man makes my blood boil
By now I’m sure you’ve seen the video of 22 year-old Deonte Edward Bradley viciously punching 91 year-old WWII veteran Leonard Sims in Detroit while others stand by and do nothing. As to be expected, the media has aired the video over and over again.
I was in shock the first time I saw it. How could someone be so heinous? These are the occasions when I believe in public stoning and beheading. I know that may seem particularly vicious in and of itself but when I know that someone has taken advantage of a child or an elderly person, it just brings that out in me. I’m not perfect; God is still working on me.
When I saw that video of Mr. Sims being attacked, I thought about the guy that beat and robbed the elderly woman in New York and the cop in Chicago that kicked and stomped the woman in the bar. What could possibly go through the attacker’s mind when they’re doing something like that? What has the world come to?
There is no excuse for such violent actions --- none whatsoever. Don’t waste my time and yours talking about a disadvantaged childhood and not having a father in the household. I don’t even want to hear about being sexually abused as a child. There is no excuse.
And what about the low-lifes that stood by while Mr. Sims was being pummeled? What say they? Mr. Sims could have easily been my Dad and the woman robbed in New York could have been my Mom. Heck, it could be you or me if we are blessed to live that long. We must stop allowing criminals to take over our communities. Yes, even if the criminals are our children, relatives or friends, the madness must stop.
Mr. Sims thinks Bradley should be charged with attempted murder; so do I. At the moment I’m too pissed off to think of the appropriate legal terminology but the people who stood by while Sims was attacked should be charged with something too.
Mr. Sims appears to be healing from his wounds. It was heartwarming to see him and his wife on television; they seem to be such a lovely couple. They reminded me of my parents, always espousing getting an education. That’s what Black folk did back in the day until our priorities got twisted and proper English was mocked. Anyhoo, that’s another post for another time.
You know who I feel the most sorry for? Deonte Bradley’s mother, children and siblings, if he has any. Can you imagine how it feels to know that your son, dad or brother was such a cowardly bully and his actions have been broadcast all over the world?
Deonte Bradley has a right to his day in court. Until then, I hope the brothers in lock-up teach him a thing or two about hurting old people. I told you God ain’t through with me yet.

Enlarging my Circle of Love
I talk too much. That’s what my friends tell me. They could be right but I think a more accurate characterization is that I talk a lot. Yep. I do. The amazing thing is I’m actually quite shy. Yep, I am. I talk about things I’m passionate about otherwise I don’t say very much.
When my girlfriends and I used to go out on Fridays for Happy Hour, they would warn me not to smile at everyone. Can you believe that? Moi? By nature, I’m a happy person. After a hard week at work, I wanted to de-stress…unwind…relax. I didn’t smile at everyone but if I felt like smiling at someone, I did.
Usually I ended up talking to some guy for which English was not his native language. Reading Rainbow…Rainbow Coalition…We are the World…my girlfriends gave me a number of similar nicknames. I have to admit that it used to tick me off a little. Hey, I was just being me. Unless given a reason, I was not and still am not rude. Consequently, we didn’t pay for many drinks and over the years, I have gained a rainbow of friends.
I’ve learned that a pleasant personality will take a person far in life. At the time I didn’t realize that I was enlarging my circle of love. It was not a conscious effort; I realized later that I was modeling the behavior of my parents and other adults I admired.
While today is Mother’s Day, I thank my Mom and my Dad for teaching me to love everyone, especially myself.

Deaf Mute Dancers from China Astound in "Thousand-Hand Guan-Yin"
As long as you are kind and there is love in your heart, a thousand hands will naturally come to your aid. As long as you are kind and there is love in your heart, you will reach out with a thousand hands to help others. Guan Yin is the bodhisattva of compassion, revered by Buddhists as the Goddess of Mercy. Her name is short for Guan Shi Yin. Guan means to observe, watch, or monitor; Shi means the world; Yin means sounds, specifically sounds of those who suffer. Thus, Guan Yin is a compassionate being who watches for, and responds to, the people in the world who cry out for help.

Those Girls Gone Wild videos should be moved to the adult TV channels
The recent uproar over painful comments made by Don Imus about the Rutgers ladies basketball team forced music industry moguls to re-evaluate the negative language and images in rap music. I am praying that a similar incident will force change regarding the filming and distribution of those damn Girls Gone Wild videos. I really don’t understand why the general population is not up in arms about these videos. The impact of the Girls Gone Wild videos is just as negative as rap music, if not more so. There is a time and place for most things. Basic cable channels, no matter the time of the broadcast day, are not the place to hawk Girls Gone Wild. Move them to the adult channels where they belong. The behavior of the young women in the advertisement is beyond disgusting. The girls are too young to understand the damage participating in these videos can have on their future, unless they want to be porn stars. I also don’t get why those trashy commercials don’t violate FCC laws. Don Imus is off the air but perhaps another media personality will step forward and say something about Girls Gone Wild.

Nick Cannon to wed Selita Ebanks
The whirlwind romance of Nick Cannon and lingerie model Selita Ebanks is the stuff romance novels are made of. The two met in Miami during Super Bowl weekend in February and now they’re engaged to be married. Whatever Ebanks has done to Cannon has his nose so wide open you could drive a train through it. His over the top proposal captured on the Jumbotron, flying both sets of parents in for the occasion and specially designed 15-carat engagement ring priced at $400G are proof of that. They make such a nice couple; prayerfully, their union will survive the challenges they are likely to face. Is three months long enough to be with a person before proposing marriage?

Get this great news widget for your blog!
While visiting Peter’s blog, Hilltopia, I came across this great widget from widgetbox. It shows news headlines in various categories: World, Nation, Business, Technology, Sports, Entertainment and Health. In addition to the option of selecting a topic, the user can also modify the size of the widget, layout and country on which the news is based.
Here's the description from the widgetbox site:
Newsmap is an application that visually reflects the constantly changing landscape of the Google News news aggregator. A treemap visualization algorithm helps display the enormous amount of information gathered by the aggregator. Treemaps are traditionally space-constrained visualizations of information. Newsmap's objective takes that goal a step further and provides a tool to divide information into quickly recognizable bands which, when presented together, reveal underlying patterns in news reporting across cultures and within news segments in constant change around the globe. Newsmap does not pretend to replace the googlenews aggregator. Its objective is to simply demonstrate visually the relationships between data and the unseen patterns in news media. It is not thought to display an unbiased view of the news; on the contrary, it is thought to ironically accentuate the bias of it.
Hilltopia is focused mainly on Tacoa, Washigton but also touches global topics. There are other useful and entertaining widgets on that site. You may want to snag others after you visit to add some kick to your page. Check it out.

Special Notice to All Men: Put the Toilet Seat Down!
Perhaps it’s just a woman thing, I don’t know, help me out, please. Why can’t men just put the toilet seat down after they use it? Arrrrggh! I’m not usually so ticked about it but lately I’ve had way too much of this. I know this is not a new issue between men and women but today is not the day for me to deal with this. It really drives me crazy and aesthetically it’s just wrong.
I’ve been looking for anything to help with this situation. Here's a product I'm thinking of buying.
Are you dealing with this issue? If so, how do you handle it? Help, my patience is wearing thin. I think I'll have some chocolate candy and calm down.

Florida is on fire
My desk is positioned near a huge window (which definitely needs cleaning) that allows me to see a portion of Biscayne Bay. At one time during the recent past, the view was idyllic. Now, I get to see the progressively gentrified area to the west lose its flavor in an attempt to provide more housing and revenue sources to Miami, one of the poorest cities in the country. I don’t enjoy the spectacular view as much as most would think as much of my time is spent on the computer or telephone. Yesterday was no exception as I didn’t notice much of the view until late in the day as I prepared to leave. What was that haze engulfing Miami for as far as I could see to the east and west? It looked so strange. I’ve seen smoke before but never covering such a huge span of area. Something was seriously wrong. To make matters worse, it was still rush hour. I prayed the crazy Miami drivers would demonstrate some sensibility on the interstate. Later I would learn that the entire state of Florida is on fire. Brush fires from as far north as the Florida-Georgia line had spawned over 200 fires throughout the state. More than 300 homes were evacuated. Florida governor Charlie Crist declared a state of emergency because of the fires. The smoke had dissipated significantly by the time I arrived at home. I could smell a bit of the fire in the air and it caused me to cough for a few minutes. The dry, windy weather spread the fires quickly throughout south Florida. I stayed inside and turned on the television to see news of flooding off the southeastern coast, flooding in the Midwest and fires in California. Since disasters have permeated the United States, there is really nowhere to run to and nowhere to hide. In the meantime, I’m going to get my disaster supplies in order and pray --- not necessarily in that order.

Shop my aStore --- Vanessa's Fabulous Finds!Don’t buy gas on May 15th? Internet hoaxes, rumors and outright lies...Please stop forwarding that e-mail!
Subject: FW: Don't pump gas May 15th 2007 NO GAS...On May 15th 2007 Don't pump gas on May 15th In April 1997, there was a "gas out" conducted nationwide in protest of gas prices. Gasoline prices dropped 30 cents a gallon overnight. On May 15th 2007, all internet users are to not go to a gas station in protest of high gas prices. Gas is now over $3.00 a gallon in most places. There are 73,000,000+ American members currently on the internet network, and the average car takes about 30 to 50 dollars to fill up. If all users did not go to the pump on the 15th, it would take $2,292,000,000.00 (that's almost 3 BILLION) out of the oil companies pockets for just one day, so please do not go to the gas station on May 15th and let's try to put a dent in the Middle Eastern oil industry for at least one day. If you agree (which I can't see why you wouldn't) resend this to all your contact list. With it saying, "Don't pump gas on May 15th"I must have received that message or some variation of it at least ten times within the last six weeks. I’d like to know who started this absurdity so they can be publicly stoned. As a matter of fact, I’m thinking of going to a gas station that day in protest of the protest. Let me make it perfectly clear that the price of gasoline is an issue that we do not devote nearly enough coverage to. I’m not talking about just reporting the high prices but an in-depth explanation of how the whole gasoline supply and pricing system works. Can you say rip-off? One thing is certain, a one-day ‘gas out’ will not lower gasoline prices. It didn’t in 1999, 2000 or any other subsequent year. Please stop forwarding that e-mail. Snopes.com features a great entry about this year’s ‘gas out’ campaign and others from the recent past. Check it out at http://www.snopes.com/politics/gasoline/nogas.asp. As a matter of fact, check out that website for other internet rumors, hoaxes and outright lies. Folks, Bill Gates is not sending you any money for forwarding an e-mail, Tommy Hilfiger and Liz Claiborne did not make those racist remarks about Blacks and other minorities wearing their clothing, Maya Angelou did not write that poem ‘Clothes’ and William Hung is not dead. Before you forward that e-mail, verify its validity at Snopes, Break the Chain and Urban Legends, please.

Tweaking my blog: How to unhide navigator bar on Final Sense templates
As you can see I have changed my blog template yet again. I know, I know, I need to find one design and stick with it but why when there are so many fabulous designs out there on the web. Anyhoo, I really liked the “Pink Flower”, 3-column template by FinalSense that I used before. It was clean, simple, and elegant and featured my favorite color --- pink. The down side was the time it took trying to get pictures and information to fit in the smaller columns of the layout. I found myself venturing back over to the FinalSense designs and I’m glad I did. If you haven’t visited that site, you’ll definitely be pleased. You’ll find a variety of Blogger templates and website designs; surely some of them will be to your liking. Did I mention that the designs are user friendly and priced just right --- free? The design I’m using is called “Red Fish”. I like the single fish breaking away from the crowd in the fish bowl; it kinda describes the unconventional side of my personality. But enough about me, what’s your interpretation of this design? One major inconvenience with the Pink Flower design was the missing Blogger navigator bar. The navigator bar facilitates routine tasks such as new posts and customizing the blog site layout. You don’t know how much you appreciate that bar until it’s missing. To unhide the navigator bar, go to Blogger “Template” and select “Edit HTML” tab. Find the code below on the template.

More than 20 Haitians dead and dozens missing as boat capsizes
More than twenty are dead and dozens missing as a boat filled with Haitian migrants capsized in shark-infested waters off the shores of the Turks-Caicos Islands. The boat was being towed by Turks-Caicos law enforcement when the tragedy occured.
How long will the U.S. government continue to discriminate against migrants to this country. As the illegal alien debate heated up because of unrest during a recent protest in Los Angeles, Haitians still try to make it the Unitied States. Most are sent back to the island while Cuban refugees are welcomed if they make it to land.
Immigration is a complicated and emotional issue. To know that so many people have died and/or were dismembered by sharks, is difficult to fathom. Haitians throughout South Florida are in mourning. People who are humane are in mourning also.

Shop my aStore --- Vanessa's Fabulous Finds!Family Reunion
Today turned out to be a great day. Aunts, uncles and cousins came from Texas and New York to visit. It was really great to see them. My Aunt Betty is still as crazy as ever. I promised I'd visit them in New York before the year ends.
There are two things on my 'Life's To Do List" that can be checked off when I visit. One is to see the broadway play, "The Color Purple" and the second is to make a snowman, snow angel and snowball.
Amazingly, my younger cousins are all way taller than me. Heck, they're taller than everyone --- further proof of the effect of growth hormones in the food we eat. I'm 5' 5 1/2'', my cousin V.J. is 6' 3'' and BeBe is 5' 10''. That may not seem like a big deal but V.J.' s mom is 5' 4'' and his dad is 5' 9''. As for BeBe, her mom is 5' 2'' and her dad, 5' 9''. I felt like a midget standing next to them.
As my family chatted, I noticed that our resemblance is more pronounced as we age. My dad's family's genes are stronger because all of their offspring look alike. One of my male cousins, Charles, looks so much like his mom that it's frightening. Their resemblance wasn't that strong when we were kids.
My dad was so happy to have his sister and brothers around. They are from a family of twelve siblings. Unfortunately, they are scattered throughout the U.S. and don't see each other often. Three of them have passed on. My dad is the second oldest and the oldest male. He has his health challenges so I know that he's also contemplating his mortality.
This family gathering was impromptu but well worth it. I made a vow to contact all of my cousins. Although we're separated by distance, we must keep the family connected. Forever.
A Family by Unknown
A Family is a Place To cry To laugh To vent frustration To ask for help And tease And yell To be kissed and hugged and smiled at.
A Family is People Who care when you are sad Who love you no matter what Who share your triumphs Who don't expect you to be perfect Just grow with honesty In your own direction.
A Family is a Circle Where we learn to like ourselves Where we learn to make good decisions Where we learn to think before we do Where we learn integrity and respect for others Where we are special Where we share ideas Where we listen and are listened to Where we learn the rules of life To prepare ourselves for the world. The world is a Place Where anything can happen. If we grow in a Loving Family We are ready for the world.

Shop my aStore --- Vanessa's Fabulous Finds!Friday Rant: 'NHI'...Judge who used racist term should resign!
A Broward County, Florida judge openly made a racist remark regarding the verdict in an attempted murder case before him. He remarked to the defense attorney, ‘”You know, NHI.” The attorney did not know the meaning of the term. NHI means No Humans Involved. You see, in the aforementioned case, all of the defendants were Black and the victims were Black. NHI. I’d be lying if I said that kind of statement doesn’t get my blood boiling, even if only for a few seconds. It’s those kinds of situations that tick me off. A person with such power over the lives and livelihood of others should be unbiased. Using such an insidious term to refer to a group of people is reprehensible at best. I don’t paint all whites with the same brush. I don’t paint all of any group with the same brush. I also can not be in denial and neither should you. When I heard about the incident with the judge, I was reminded of the times I’ve been told that I’m “too sensitive.” Yeah, right. This is what Black folks have to deal with everyday. I’m talking about decent, hard-working Black folks just trying to make it in the world today. It doesn’t matter how frequently it happens; the fact that it happens is just wrong. This rant is not to diminish problems other people have, just don’t try to minimize mine. No doubt the judge thought he was speaking in confidence to the attorney. Perhaps he thought the attorney felt the same as he because the attorney is white. Not this time. The judge requested and was ranted a reassignment to civil court. I don’t think that’s sufficient; he should resign. Click here for the full story. P.S. I don’t know what’s happening in Broward County but another judge gave my sister such a difficult time during her divorce; it was unreal. He resigned later because he was caught smoking pot in a park.

Shop my aStore --- Vanessa's Fabulous Finds!Ringside seats at the de la Hoya - Mayweather fight going for $20,000? What's wrong with this picture?
Oscar de la Hoya and Floyd Mayweather are scheduled to fight on Friday night in Vegas. Their match-up has been hawked and hyped ad nauseum. Millions of dollars will be made that evening.
It’s likely the fight will not end quickly as the early Tyson fights did. The crowd will be given its money’s worth or will it?
Ringside seats are reported to sell for $20,000. For a fight? Even if had Bill Gates money, it wouldn’t be worth it. I’m not trying to burst anyone’s boxing bubble but come on now.
I know some folks that don’t earn that much in a year. There are several college students that could use that much money to continue their studies and families with medicals bills and housing needs, etc., etc., etc.,. Surely you get the picture.
Folks can spend their hard-earned or perhaps not so hard-earned money however they choose but twenty grand for a few minutes seems like such a waste.

More than 65,000 people dead...Is that "Mission Accomplished"?
On Monday there was a call for blog silence in honor of the victims at Virginia Tech. The tributes extended to other victims. Matt, over at A Bowl of Stupid, provided excellent commentary to put the Iraq war in perspective. It is particularly timely as it reminds of President Bush’s declaration of “Mission Accomplished.”
Wow, that’s some mission. In spite of “Mission Accomplished” declared by President Bush, the death toll has risen to 3,335 American soldiers and Iraqi civilian deaths at more than 62,000. What? How can that possibly be justifiable? Where’s the outrage? Instead of a day of blog silence how about a day of posting about this inhumane, ridiculous war?
If these deaths signal mission accomplished, what in heaven’s name was the mission?

Sick with the flu but I didn't miss Robin Thicke on AI
I didn’t sleep well last night. For much of the early morning hours I was nauseous, vomiting and dizzy. I wanted to go to the emergency room but I know how that is around here. If you’re not bleeding from a gunshot wound, it’s pretty much a waiting game.
After several cups of tea, I felt better. I woke up at five o’clock as usual but still felt a tad weak. No going to the office for me today; I’m staying home. I managed to make a few phone calls and a few e-mails before my bed called me again.
Most of the day was a blur but thanks to my friend, Linda, I woke up just in time to see Robin Thicke on American Idol. It’s back to bed for me until tomorrow. Peace.

Robin Thicke will be on American Idol tomorrow night!
I have not watched one second of American Idol since Sanjaya was voted off. No, I’m not a Fanjaya, just not that interested. I didn’t watch AI during last week’s Idol Gives Back Campaign. That will change tomorrow night because Robin Thicke is scheduled to sing “Lost Without U.”
Yes, Robin Thicke. I love that song each time I hear it. Granted, Robin Thicke doesn’t have the best voice but he sings that song with so much soul that it’s hypnotic. This is definitely his year --- Oprah, American Idol, a movie role and platinum album. I’m glad for him. Surely, a Grammy for “Lost Without U” is in his future.
When Robin Thicke comes on tomorrow night, I going to call my buddy, who shall remain nameless. He knows who he is. I know he doesn’t like “Lost Without You” or all the swooning about Robin Thicke. Too bad. He says that I should listen to some real music.
This post was written just to aggravate him. This is my blog and I can do that. LOL.
My job is done!

You can win $300 per week at Helium.com!
since March of this year but never submitted anything until today. There were several topics from which to choose but I settled on “Why do people think that African American men cheat more than white men?”. I wasn’t crazy about the topic but I thought I should go for it anyway.
Why that topic? Well, for a couple of reasons. First of all, there were only a few writers who’d submitted on the topic and second, I felt that I had something to say. Off I went, typing whatever came to my mind…no outline and no thought to opening or closing statement. I just go with the flow.
My high school English teacher, Mrs. Molitosky, would not be happy about that. As I write, I can picture Mrs. M shaking her head because I didn’t follow the rules. I tend to just write what I feel and edit later. Mrs. M was always pleased with the end product, just not my method.
Folks, I’d be the first to admit that I still feel a little weird when my work is published. I am even more weirded out when people write to me or personally compliment me on my writing. I’m not trying to creep anyone out but when I write, it’s like making love. I feel as though I’m sharing my inner most self and that’s not easy for me to do. Click the graphic below to read my first article at Helium. Let me know what you think.

Shop my aStore --- Vanessa's Fabulous Finds!NOTICE: No Blogging Tomorrow
Tomorrow is Monday, April 30. There will be no words posted on this blog only a repeat of the graphic you see here. April 30 has been declared a day of blog silence in tribute to the 32 victims of the recent tragedy at Virginia Tech University.
What began as a tribute to those victims has, expectedly, expanded to include all victims. There certainly have been enough tragic situations for us to absorb and process. Rather than wallow in the sadness, the resilience of survivors and stories of love and courage inspire me to do more to help others. There but for the grace of God go I.
So, tomorrow, during my blog silence, special prayers will go out to victims, survivors and loved ones.
Blog Silence Tribute to:
* The Virginia Tech Massacre;
* Hurricane Katrina;
* The Murder and Mayhem in Darfur;
* Haiti;
* Tsunami victims;
* The family of Martin Lee Anderson and other juveniles murdered and injured in Florida’s juvenile detention system;
* Rilya Wilson and other missing children;
* Everyone who ever fought for civil rights and the freedoms I enjoy today; and
* My ancestors.
This is my list; feel free to develop your own or just pray for everyone. Please join me and many others in the silence. Thank you.

Lunch @ Luna Cafe'
Today was the last day of Administrative Professionals Week. My boss made sure that we celebrated our assistants with a token of appreciation each day of the week. It’s her demonstration of appreciation that keeps me dedicated to always completing projects in professionalism and excellence.
Our assistants were so appreciative of their gifts that they gave each of us the most beautiful floral arrangement. The ladies put together themselves which made the flowers all the more special. We work extremely hard in that office and always manage to meet unbelievable deadlines under grueling circumstances. We are a wonderful team. I’d love for us to remain together forever but that’s not the way life works.
Part of today’s celebration was lunch away from the building. The location was a secret to the ladies until we actually arrived. Our reservations were at 11:30 but we didn’t get there until almost noon. Several last minute phone calls almost caused us to cancel.
As we arrived at Luna Café we were greeted by the valet. He was pleasant with an engaging personality. The exterior of the restaurant was beautifully appointed with elegant tables, chairs and complementary landscaping. The interior was just as lovely as the exterior.
Our server, Ernesto, was friendly and charming. The menu contained a wonderful array of Italian entrees but Ernesto’s delivery of the specials in his heavy Italian accent was adorable. I think we had him repeat the specials at least four times just to hear him speak.
It was difficult to select an entrée. I settled on fettuccine alfredo with grilled chicken; it was delicious. No, that’s not quite true. It was the best fettuccine I’ve ever had and I’ve eaten quite a bit of fettuccine in my lifetime. The chicken breast was grilled and sliced to perfection. About half way through the entrée, I was already stuffed. I forced a few more forkfuls down until I couldn’t take it anymore.
Our meals were quite reasonable also. The six of us had an entrée and beverage for a little more than ninety dollars including tax. I love the restaurant and plan to order a different entrée each time I return.
It was most important that the assistants enjoyed the restaurant and they did.

Shop my aStore --- Vanessa's Fabulous Finds!Florida is drying up

At 9.85 feet, Lake Okeechobee is about foot higher than its lowest level recorded in May 2001. It’s very likely that we’ll move to Phase 3 restrictions in Miami. Phase 3 includes once a week watering of lawns; Palm Beach County has already imposed Phase 3 restrictions.
Fires in some parts of the state continue to destroy land on a daily basis. This is serious but I’m not feeling the sense of urgency I’d expect. I guess the powers that be don’t want to frighten the masses. I’m not frightened but I’m definitely aware.
As I saw the difference in the water level at Lake Okeechobee, I could only think of Mel Gibson in the movie Mad Max. Will that movie and others with similar themes prove prophetic? Will we destroy the land to the point that water is such a rare and valuable commodity? I didn’t think so until now.
If our dwindling water level is such an issue, why are humongous skyscraper condos being constructed in south Florida? I mean really, there are too many people for the resources as it is. Vegetation is already suffering. Next, evidence of sick and dying wildlife will be reported. When do we stop the madness?
I’m not a tree-hugging environmentalist but I get it. I finally really get it. If we don’t do something to alleviate this water problem, future generations are destined to suffer the consequences. As you can see from the map above, Florida is not the only state suffering from drought conditions.
A picture is worth a thousand words.

My Men's Room Surprise
I worked late at the office last night. As the five pints of water I’d consumed throughout the day kicked in again, I had to “pay my water bill” again. Marie, the custodian, had just finished mopping the floor I needed to walk across to get to the ladies room. There are a few things that bother me in life and one of them is someone walking on a floor that I’ve just mopped. I quickly assessed that I’d never make it if I walked around to the other hallway to get to the ladies room. Marie said, “Just go in the men’s room. It’s right there.” I said, “No way; the men’s room?” “None of them are on the floor, just go in, I’ll watch the door,” Marie continued. While we’re having this conversation --- I still need to go, right? --- then it hits me that I’ve never been in a men’s room. Yup….that’s right…not in all my years. I’ve been in a locker room but not a men’s room. Then Marie said something that piqued my curiosity, “Their restroom is cleaner than yours anyway.” What? Now, I was no longer in a hurry, I was just plain nosy. As I stuck my head in the door, I immediately noticed how clean it was. The ladies room, at the end of the day, is not exactly representative of ladies. The men’s room was tastefully decorated and well…clean. The layout was much like the ladies room except for the urinal. I still don’t understand handling your business in the presence of others. I guess that’s truly a “man thing”. I made my way to the last stall, did what I had to and got out of there quickly after washing my hands. Marie laughed at me as I ran out of the door and back to work. I was relieved but still felt odd having used the men’s facilities. The men’s room is closer to my office than the ladies room. I have to pass the men’s room each time I leave my office. After last night, I will never feel the same having been in the most private men’s area on the floor.

For Laughs
My husband and I divorced over religious differences.
He thought he was God, and I didn't

There are two times when a man doesn't understand a woman:
Before marriage and after marriage.

Because when they arrive, they're wet and wild, but when they go, they take your house and car.

The woman applying for a job in a Florida lemon grove seemed way too qualified for the job.
"Look Miss," said the foreman, "have you any actual experience in picking lemons?"
"Well, as a matter if fact, yes!" she replied. "I've been divorced three times."

An old man goes to the Wizard to ask him if he can remove a curse he has been living with for the last 40 years.
The Wizard says, "Maybe, but you will have to tell me the exact words that were used to put the curse on you."
The old man says without hesitation, "I now pronounce you man and wife."

I was in the express lane at the store quietly fuming. Completely ignoring the sign, the woman ahead of me had slipped into the check-out line pushing a cart piled high with groceries. Imagine my delight when the cashier beckoned the woman to come forward looked into the cart and asked sweetly, "So which six items would you like to buy?"
Wouldn't it be great if that happened more often?

Because they had no reservations at a busy restaurant, my elderly neighbor and his wife were told there would be a 45-minute wait for a table. "Young man, we're both 90 years old," the husband said . "We may not have 45 minutes."
They were seated immediately.

All eyes were on the radiant bride as her father escorted her down the aisle. They reached the altar and the waiting groom; the bride kissed her father and placed something in his hand. The guests in the front pews responded with ripples of laughter. Even the priest smiled broadly. As her father gave her away in marriage, the bride gave him back his credit card.

Bob said: "I would like them to say I was a wonderful husband, a fine spiritual leader, and a great family man."
Joe commented: "I would like them to say I was a wonderful teacher and servant of God who made a huge difference in people's lives."
Al said: "I'd like them to say, "Look, he's moving!"

Smith climbs to the top of Mt. Sinai to get close enough to talk to God.
Looking up, he asks the Lord.. "God, what does a million years mean to you?"
The Lord replies, "A minute."
Smith asks, "And what does a million dollars mean to you?"
The Lord replies, "A penny."
Smith asks, "Can I have a penny?"
The Lord replies, "In a minute."

A man goes to a shrink and says, "Doctor, my wife is unfaithful to me. Every evening, she goes to Larry's bar and picks up men.
In fact, she sleeps with anybody who asks her! I'm going crazy.
What do you think I should do?"
"Relax," says the Doctor, "take a deep breath and calm down. Now, tell me, exactly where is Larry's bar?"

John was on his deathbed and gasped pitifully.
"Give me one last request, dear," he said.
"Of course, John," his wife said softly.
"Six months after I die," he said, "I want you to marry Bob."
"But I thought you hated Bob," she said.
With his last breath John said, "I do!"

A man goes to see the Rabbi "Rabbi, something terrible is happening and I have to talk to you about it."
The Rabbi asked, "What's wrong?"
The man replied, "My wife is poisoning me."
The Rabbi, very surprised by this, asks, "How can that be?"
The man then pleads, "I'm telling you, I'm certain she's poisoning me, what should I do?"
The Rabbi then offers, "Tell you what. Let me talk to her, I'll see what I can find out and I'll let you know."
A week later the Rabbi calls the man and says, "Well, I spoke to your wife.
I spoke to her on the phone for three hours.
You want my advice?"
The man said yes and the Rabbi replied, "Take the poison."

Thought for the Day: 'Common ground'
Every person has a unique perspective. And yet, the things we all have in common are far more numerous than our differences.
Behind every difference of opinion, behind every disagreement, behind each conflict there is common ground. And that common ground can be the starting point for resolving the conflict.
Finding common ground does not mean giving in or forcing the other person to accept your point of view. Instead, it means discovering the areas in which you already share a similar perspective.
It is well worth the effort to find things upon which everyone can agree. For that sets the stage for true understanding.
Often, every person seeks the same ultimate outcome, and the disagreement is about the details of how to get there. Even when you are unable to agree, it is always possible to understand.
Seek to focus on that understanding, and work to find common ground. It is from that point that everyone involved can begin to create real value for all.

Strange but True: Attorney General Alberto Gonzales
Am I in the Twilight Zone or what? U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales remains in his position as the nation’s top lawmaker. After last week’s performance before the Senate Judiciary Committee, I fully expected Gonzales to resign.
What is even more remarkable is President Bush’s unshakable support for his friend, Gonzales. Why is the president supporting Gonzales when so many of his fellow Republicans are practically calling for his head?
Gonzales couldn’t remember incidents that occurred only months ago and President Bush compliments him? I don’t think so.
Whatever the reason, this Gonzales incident will become more and more damaging to the Republican Party. The longer Gonzales maintains his Attorney General position, the more incompetent and corrupt the Bush administration appears.

The Don Imus controversy continues as producer is fired
The firing continues after the Don Imus controversy. Bernard McGuirk, executive producer of the show, has paid the price for referring to the Rutgers women’s basketball team as “hardcore ho’s”. It was McGuirk that used the term ‘ho’s’ first that evening.
After learning of the Imus incident, I thought it categorically unfair that McGuirk was not included in discussions about the controversy. I don’t know who was behind his firing but I am glad that he’s gone also.

Robin Thicke on Oprah
Hip-Hop Responds to Imus Controversy
On Tuesday evening, actually, early Wednesday morning, I awoke from an unintended sleep on the sofa to see the opening credits of the re-broadcast of The Oprah Winfrey Show. Since her show airs at 4 PM, I miss it because I’m at the office. If the topic is of particular interest to me, I try to watch it when it’s re-broadcast at 1:35 the following morning. I know that I could record it but frankly haven’t tried since we switched from cable TV to satellite.
I hadn’t planned to watch Oprah this time but the show was about the Don Imus flap. It clicked that Paula Mooney’s comment on my blog was about this show. This was Day Two of the topic After Imus: Now What?. The panel included Common, Russell Simmons, Kevin Liles and Ben Chavis. Cool. This should be interesting.
As I watched the show, I became grateful that Imus stirred this controversy; this dialogue likely would not have occurred without it. A group of young women from Spelman College were included in the discussion with Gayle King via remote broadcast from Atlanta. Spelman is a significant part of the discussion as students protested an appearance of rapper Nelly back in 2004.
I haven’t seen such side-stepping and tap-dancing around an issue since…well, Attorney General Alberto Gonazles’ testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee.
Common tried to be a bridge-builder but that didn’t really work. What was he doing on the panel anyway? I mean, he’s intelligent, handsome and fine but frankly the controversy is not about rappers such as him. Where were Snoop and 50 Cent? Russell Simmons was both agitated and defensive. I expected a mogul such as him to be a lot cooler under pressure and under pressure he was.
My young sisters from Spelman were on point and relentless. During one attempt at levity, the sisters put everyone on check. As a Black woman, some folks, even in other countries think its okay to call them “ho’s”. As one sister stated, “no one asks to see our college ID, they just call us ho's.”
What I didn’t hear from the panelists was a sincere apology to Black women. What I didn’t feel throughout the conversation was a sincere acknowledgement and understanding of the pain heaped upon Black women by Black men through this so-called music. When those Black men try to justify their actions by blaming it on the music industry, it hurts.
Stanley Crouch said it perfectly…"[The hip-hop community] can't explain to these women why it's okay for them to be denigrated in order for them to make money because finally, to me, when we look at it—this is purely a pimp game. That is, that the women are supposed to suffer so a handful of knuckleheads become wealthy."
Let’s see what happens after a scheduled closed door meeting amongst rappers and music industry leaders today. Since it’s really all about the Benjamins, a big meeting is required. No doubt they’ll discuss the image of rappers and the effect of rap music. How will a change in rap music affect their collective and individual pockets? If each of them sincerely cared about anything other than money this situation wouldn’t exist in the first place.

Students join in prayer for Virginia Tech
Students at my alma mater, Florida A&M University, held a vigil for the slain and wounded at Virginia Tech. From all accounts, it was an emotional gathering. One student from a nearby Virginia town mentioned the long-lasting psychological scars the incident would leave.
Demonstrations of love such as this make me proud as an alumna of Florida A&M. More important, I am proud as a member of the human race.
Many think our young people are a lost generation with recent talks of the negative effects of hip-hop. This gathering and others to be held in Tallahassee and throughout the nation prove that we can come together when tragedy strikes. Let’s not wait for such horrific incidents as this massacre to show love and unity.

Massacre at Virginia Tech
As details of Monday’s massacre at Virginia Tech are made public, questions regarding security on college campuses are thrust in the spotlight. On residential college campuses students tend to be shielded from the realities of the real world. It is not unusual for students to leave dorm rooms unlocked or display reckless disregard for campus property. It’s college and they are having a great time while they prepare to become the future leaders of the world; that’s what college kids do.
Ted Bundy’s murderous rampage in 1978 in Tallahassee resulted in the attacks on 5 Florida State University women; two of them died. Danny Rolling murdered five University of Florida students in 1990. Each incident shook us to the core whether we attended that university or not. The same holds true for Virginia Tech.; it’s a human thing.
This latest episode at Virginia Tech raises so many questions about security, more effective use of technology and easy access to guns. As I watched news reports and portions of the memorial service, the incident began to affect me personally. There really is something to the six degrees of separation concept. A friend was a former college roommate of one of the VT administrators and another friend related the story of the father of a VT student who called him from her cell phone as the gunman unloaded his weapon. Can you imagine the emotional turmoil of a father listening to gunshots in the background as he talks to his daughter who is hiding in a bathroom?
Notes and writings of the gunman, Cho Seung Hui, indicate he may have been experiencing a mental breakdown of some sort. His writings will certainly be analyzed over the coming weeks. The actions of the University’s administration and police force have been condemned by some and applauded by others. No doubt litigation will be initiated by parents of those murdered and this incident will remain in our headlines.
Let’s keep Virginia Tech in our prayers. What happened there could have happened anywhere.

Weighing in on Imus: Where are the brothers?
Don Imus and the world will never forget the term “nappy-headed ho’s”. A team of young women from Rutgers University were thrust into the world spotlight and protests resulted in the firing of Imus by MSNBC and CBS.
I have never watched or listened to The Don Imus Show. He has been described as a shock-jock, comedian, radio disk jockey, on-air personality; the terms go on and on. I don’t care to listen to Imus. I’m sure he feels the same about me. One thing is certain, he crossed the line. I won’t rehash all of the details but let me make it perfectly clear that I am pleased he was fired.
As a Black woman, I am not offended by the term “nappy-headed” although it was intended as an insult. In its natural state, my hair is coarse…kinky…nappy and it is beautiful. The sooner more Blacks accept that, the better off Blacks will be; it’s a psychological thing.
I observed the coverage of the Imus incident unfold with an objective mindset. When Imus went on Al Sharpton’s radio show and defended himself by asserting that rappers frequently used the term “ho”, I was outraged. There it goes again, I thought. If ‘you people’ can use that term so can others.
In a twisted sense there is validity to that point but what I don’t understand is why whites want to use racially offensive terms except for racist reasons. If you are not a Black American, I may never be able to get you to understand why Blacks in the States refer to each other as ‘nigger’ or ‘nigga’ or ‘niggah’. It happens most often to take away the pain. When you’re the majority, you don’t understand that kind of pain. That’s just the way it is.
Where are the brothers?
Here’s what gets me the most. After the Imus flap, I expected Black men to rally to the defense of Black women in a big way. After all we are their Nubian queens, goddesses, princesses and all those other wonderful terms, right? ***screeching brake sound*** Maybe not.
This incident should not become a Black women against Black men thing but I have to ask myself: where are my brothers? Where are my kings? Where is the loud, deafening roar I should hear from black men about the defamation of Black women?
Vestiges of slavery
OK, it’s 2007. We all should be aware of the destruction of slavery upon Blacks around the world. The attack upon the Black family structure and psyche of Blacks is still prevalent. When do the masses of Blacks really overcome that travesty? Do Black men still feel unable to protect Black women as in the days of slavery? Or do they simply not care? After all, I ain’t saying she a gold-digger but she ain’t messin wit no broke nigger. Billions of dollars are made at the expense of Black women. Some Black women such as Li’l Kim, Foxy Brown and Trina have profited from the degradation too. It’s so wrong.
Music industry moguls making big money from the negative images of rap and hip-hop must be called to task. I specify negative images because all rap and hip hop are not negative but the most prevalent are. David Geffen, Russell Simmons and others whose names I don’t know right now influence what we see and hear. It’s time for them to be held accountable. No, Russell doesn’t get a pass because he’s Black.
As a side note, in an interview with Don Imus in Newsweek, he says he could be on the air next week if he wanted to be. Does that sound repentant to you? I certainly don’t think so. If Imus goes to satellite radio as it is rumored, what was this latest flap about? I am glad he was fired.
I ask again, where are the brothers?

Got $8.9 Million? You can own D-Wade's house.
Miami HEAT star Dwayne Wade and his family are vacating their humongous Pinecrest (Miami) home. If you have $8.9 million, it's yours. Perhaps the six bedroom, 12,000 sq.ft. home is too small as the Wade's are expecting child #3. Whatever the reason, it's their business and they can well afford almost any home in Miami.
Check out the personalized touches including: swimming pool, marble tiles, etching of Flash and Spider Man themed bathroom.

Cops beat Mayor's former brother-in-law
An Easter morning beatdown of an innocent man has Miami-Dade cops in hot water. Henry Castro, ex-brother-in-law of Miami-Dade County mayor Carlos Alvarez, was pulled over, kicked and punched until cops realized who he is. Castro says he didn't reveal his relationship to the mayor until he thought he was going to die.
Officers mistakenly identified Castro as the person that drew a gun on an undercover officer. When the officer arrived at the scene and cleared Castro, the scene changed. Castro reports that some officers arriving on the scene consoled him. Mayor Alvarez is the former police chief. An investigation of the incident has begun. This should be very interesting. http://www1.wsvn.com/news/articles/local/MI44252/

Baby Daddy Birkhead
This week’s announcement that Larry Birkhead is Anna Nicole Smith’s baby daddy was a blip on the newsreel compared to previous ‘Anna Nicole overload’. Is that a signal that we are so over this saga? Probably not, there are other issues remaining such as the investigation of the death of Anna’s son Dannie and financial entitlement of little Dannielyn to step-dad Howard Marshall’s fortune.

Sanjaya in the final six?
Sanjaya made it through to another week on American Idol. For yet another week, he wasn’t in the bottom three. I didn’t see this week’s shows but from clips, his performance was decent this week.
Special guest, Jennifer 'J-Lo' Lopez, is a Fanjaya. Perhaps she sees something in him that many of us don’t. I frequently remind myself that he is a 17 year-old kid. Much like 16 year-old Jordin Sparks, these kids are under extreme stress. How they handle this so well is beyond me. Of course they signed on for this when they auditioned for the show; I am still in awe of their grace under fire. Will Sanjaya make next week's cut to six?

Meme: Gotta Get Goals
"The ability to succeed requires the realization of what one wants and the passionate desire to attain it." ~Unknown
Theo Johnson over at Now That’s What’s I’m Talkin’ About tagged me with this meme on goals several days ago. I’m not into tags but I really liked this one because it was different and forced me to think. I know that I should have established goals and put them in writing long ago. I’ll definitely use this exercise to my advantage. Thanks for the tag, Theo and a special shout out to Alex Shalman for starting this meme.
My ‘Gotta Get Goals’
1. Be a better Christian. God is important in my life. Sometimes it may not seem as though I know him but I do. His love has been manifested to me several times in my life. When I was a child, I didn’t recognize his protection from danger (love) until later in life. I will be a better role model for my godchildren by making they see me actively involved in church and having fun.
2. Establish a thriving school finance consulting business. I’ve been involved with budgeting, accounting, finance and auditing for 25 years, especially in the K-12 education environment. I plan to use that experience to establish my business when I retire within 5-10 years.
3. Travel to Ethiopia and Trinidad. Travel to these countries will be my own version of Roots. We’ve lost contact with our family in Trinidad and very limited knowledge of family history in Ethiopia. I plan to change that.
4. Speak and write Spanish more fluently. I live in my Miami so not a day goes by that I don’t hear Spanish spoken. I want to learn to speak and write like a native. There are so many Spanish-speaking people in the U.S. that I view speaking the language as a wise business decision.
I also want to learn Haitian-Creole. I already know a few phrases. Since I plan to continue to live in south Florida, it’s important for me to learn Creole also. My Spanish speaking and Creole speaking friends will help me reach my goal. I also speak a little Greek and German.
5. Network more. I tend to spend a lot time behind the scenes working on various projects. I need to devote more time to networking and just having a good time. That’s one way for me to build my client base for my consulting business.
6. Financial independence. Now I’m not saying I want Oprah or Bill Gates money but I do want enough money for it to work for me. I enjoy work but I want to do what I want to do and not just work to earn a paycheck. I’d also use my resources to help nurture and educate children. I do that now on a much smaller scale than I’d like.
7. Keep work life – personal life in balance. I am a workaholic which is one of the reasons why I plan to work for myself for a change. I know that it’s important to my health and well-being to have balance in my life. I’ve gotten a whole lot better but not quite where I want to be just yet.
8. Mentor children. Do you remember The Greatest Love of All? I think that is one of the greatest songs of all time. The lyrics are so true. I’d like to be able to have a group of kids to expose to the wonders of the world. That may seem corny to some but I’m a firm believer that if a child is not limited to his or her immediate environment --- family, neighborhood, etc. --- a zest for knowledge is ignited within them. Reading about Africa is one thing but being in Africa…you get the picture.
9. Write a book about my family. I’ve been thinking about this for quite some time. My family is an interesting mixture of various ethnic backgrounds. Before my paternal grandfather transitioned, he shared some interesting stories about his childhood. I never knew my maternal grandfather but from stories I’ve heard about him, he was very independent and forward-thinking. He did not allow himself to be limited or intimidated even during extreme segregation in the South. My childhood experiences in segregated north Florida and multicultural south Florida has been interesting in and of itself. If nothing more than documentation for our family reunion, I need to write that very soon.
10. Make money in my pajamas. I know several books have been published on the topic but I’d really like to be able to make a living in my pjs. I check the blogs of folks I trust like Paula Neal Mooney and a new blog acquaintance, JayEss.
OK, those are my ten. This was a very valuable exercise so I’m spreading the love and tagging:

Thank God, it's Monday!
I am so glad that last week is over. My Dad was in the hospital on Monday and Tuesday and my Mom was in the hospital Thursday through yesterday. Talk about stress. Other than Easter and being featured on MartyBLOGs, the highlight of my week was getting my car cleaned late yesterday afternoon at Karma.
I know I’ve blogged about the place before but it was just so relaxing to be away from the madness. Yep, relaxation at a car wash, go figure. Of course business was a lot slower because it was Easter. I didn’t expect them to be open at all but thank God they were. Not only hadn’t my car been washed in two weeks, it was in desperate need of a wax also.
Yesterday was the first time I’d been to Karma without a laptop computer. I was exhausted and figured my Crackberry was more than enough wireless contact with the internet. I was able to return a couple of phone calls and clear out a few e-mails on my Crackberry. Cool.
The only disappointment was that I’d gotten there too late and missed the mimosas. I settled for a couple of glasses of champagne and the baguette with honey, brie and walnuts. C’est magnifique!
By the time I’d left there, I’d spent $100 including tips to the server/bartender and the young man that did my car. I could have gotten my car waxed for half of what they charged at Karma ($60). The folks at Karma are friendly, do an excellent job and the safe and comfortable environment are worth the price.

Who’s behind Vanessa: Unplugged!?
Wanna know more about the person behind Vanessa: Unplugged!? Check out my interview with Martin Lindsey over on MartyBLOGs. Even with my big mouth, I’m actually very shy. I tend to be quite private and reserved unless I’m passionate about an issue or there’s music playing with a nice beat.
Marty’s questions were not as easy as I thought they would be. The interview was quite a blast. Marty’s a really cool guy. So, stop by MartyBLOGs and get to know your neighbors.
Thank you, Marty!

Easter Sunday morning and it’s cold in Miami
“Gray's statements came the same day the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change approved a report that concludes the world will face dire consequences to food and water supplies, along with increased flooding and other dramatic weather events, unless nations adapt to climate change.”
MIT professor Kerry Emanuel says that Gray is wrong. How are the rest of us mere mortals to know what to believe? I know that recently the weather has proven hot when it should be cold and cold when it should be hot. To make matters worse, forecasters predict an active hurricane season for 2007. I’m just gonna pray, stock up on hurricane supplies and hunker down.

Sanjaya Survives
Well, well, well, to all the Sanjaya haters, all I can say is quitcherbitchin. Sanjaya’s survival to yet another week should be no surprise. Neither is the tremendous angst from the Sanjaya haters.
Folks, it’s American Idol. Don’t you recognize that you’re being manipulated? If AI producers didn’t want Sanjaya on the show, he wouldn’t have made it past the local auditions. Save your energy from posting angry comments on the internet about Sanjaya; it’s a set up.
I only watched last night’s show to see if he made it through. After I found out Sanjaya was safe, I changed the channel. I’m sure I wasn’t the only one that did the same. When Sanjaya goes, the viewer ship will decline. Viewer ship = $$$. The producers want to make what? Money. It’s all about the Benjamins, people, lighten up.
The brevity of his stardom aside, Sanjaya Malakar has reached one name status --- Cher, Madonna, Beyonce, Oprah --- you get the picture. Stop hatin’ on the guy. So what if his fifteen minutes of fame has lasted more than an hour? It will be over in a few weeks, if not next week. Take a chill pill. I say, Sanji, baby, enjoy it while it lasts.
There is one burning question I am compelled to ask.
Does Sanjaya seem like a weird combination of Michael Jackson and Sajid Khan? Who is Sajid Khan you say? Well, let’s go ‘back in the day’ to find out.
Back in 1967 or 68, Sajid Khan was a major teenage movie star and heartthrob. He’s probably the first Indian star to attain that status. He’s best known for his role as Raji in Maya with Jay North who also played Dennis the Menace. Sajid Khan graced the cover of all the major teen magazines of that time…Tiger Beat…Flip. Someone out there knows what I’m talking about.
What’s even more amazing is the similarity in the response of teenage girls to Sajid back in the day to those who react to Sanjaya. As Simon Cowell said Tuesday night, “Incredible.”

Time is running out to file your 2006 taxes
We're two weeks away from the deadline for filing taxes for 2006. If you have not completed the project, I hope you've at least started.
Taxes are due on April 17, not April 15 as it falls on a Sunday and the next day, Monday, April 16 is Emancipation Day, a legal holiday in the district of Colombia. Don't let those two days increase your tendency to procrastinate more than you already have.
Don't wait until the absolute last minute thinking that you can just complete the necessary forms within an hour and be done with it. You never know what may arise during the process.
Some of you will be able to file using many popular software programs such as Turbo Tax --- my favorite --- or Tax Cut. I find Turbo Tax easier to use and more thorough.
If you choose to go with a tax preparer, make sure he or she is qualified. Personal recommendations by friends or acquaintances you trust may help with that decision. Always check the Better Business Bureau or your agency for professional regulation to confirm license status.
I'll be back with a few tax tips over the next couple of days.

Terry McMillan’s Gay Ex Writes Tell-All Book
The drama continues as Jonathan Plummer, gay ex-husband of best-selling author Terry McMillan writes a tell-all book about their relationship. The Jamaican-born Plummer, 23 years younger than McMillan, was the subject of her best-seller, How Stella Got Her Groove Back. The former couple is at odds in a $40 million lawsuit she has filed against him. McMillan has been the subject of controversy as she constantly refers to Plummer by derogatory terms, especially faggot.
His book, Balancing Act, will be published by Simon & Schuster and is scheduled to be released August 7. Wonder who will play him in the movie? You just know there will be a movie. This is too scandalous not to be made into a movie.
They are not the first couple in this situation and surely they won't be the last. Please let this situation go away just like the paternity of Anna Nicole Smith's baby.

Will Newt's view on bilingualism help him or hurt him?
In a speech to the National Federation of Republican women, former Speaker of the House, Newt Gingrich officially hopped on the publicity train by dubbing Spanish a language of the ghetto. Woo-hoo, I’m sure that didn’t go over well with Latino Republicans but, hey, they needed a wake-up call.
Some Latinos are truly in denial. The Republican mainstream has sent Latinos a message of their place within political society but they refuse to acknowledge it. Hello, did you get it based on Gingrich’s comments? Have Republicans, en masse, denounced Gingrich for his comments?
According to Gingrich, Americans believe English should be the official language of the government. Which Americans would that be? This English-only issue could get very heated, especially if Gingrich runs for President. Stay tuned.

Is U.S. immigration policy racist?
You may already be aware of the more than 100 Haitians migrants that reached the south Florida shore last week in an overloaded, rickety boat. Cameras captured the men, women and children as they jumped from the boat and scrambled for American soil. The scene was as distressing as one shown about four years ago. One major difference this time, one man died on the scene.
Several of the refugees had to be hospitalized due to dehydration, starvation and exposure to the elements. This is not the first time people have died trying to make a treacherous and illegal journey to the United States. This is the first time I recall a body covered with tarp on the shore.
An investigation has ensued as to whether this was a part of a human smuggling ring. I really don’t care as much about a smuggling ring as I do about the desperation in the eyes of the people that try to come to this country illegally. It is likely that the Haitians will be sent back to their country. Sent back to what? Death? Torture? Poverty?
The United States is wrestling with an existing immigration policy that has strong opponents or proponents. The latest illegal immigration attempt will likely bring attention to a policy that is viewed as racist because Haitians are Black. It is likely that protests of the treatment of Haitian immigrants will continue and grow. As Haitians grow in numbers and establish a political and economic foundation in the U.S., this situation will not be ignored.
The group accorded the most favor is Cubans. The wet foot-dry foot policy allows them to stay if they reach the shore. Haitians are sent back unless their claim for political asylum is favorable. Haitians are also not granted TPS, temporary protected status, as other immigrant groups such as Venezuelans or Colombians. That’s just wrong.
Know what bothers me more than anything else? If an overloaded rickety boat can travel from Haiti to reach the southeast coast of the United States, just how safe can I really feel even with the millions or is it billions spent on homeland security? It's definitely something to think about.

Thought for the Day: Rise above frustration
Put your frustrations in perspective, and most of them will disappear.
Refuse to get caught up in them, and those frustrations will have no power over you.
Small inconveniences and minor disappointments can lead to major disruptions if you let them. But you don't have to let them.
When you feel frustration starting to overwhelm you, choose to step back a little
bit.
Sure, the situation may be absurd and outrageous, but is it really all that important?
Your ego likes to make you blow the little things far out of proportion, because it's an easy way to feel important. Yet it can also be an enormous waste of your time and energy, not to mention the negative impact it has on your attitude. As much as possible, give the frustrations some distance. Get away from them to a place where you can calmly think through your options, and you'll find that there's almost never any need to be frustrated.
Rise above the pettiness of wasteful frustrations, with a smile on your face and generosity in your heart. And you'll be able to clearly see a fast, effective, fulfilling way forward.

Now, 15 years old, Shaquanda Cotton was released from the Texas Youth Correctional facility where she spent the last year of her life for shoving a teachers aide at her school. Prior to her release, Shaquanda's plight took a life of its own via hundreds of internet bloggers throughout the world.
How a child could be adjudicated up to seven years for such an incident where the adult was not injured is shameful and embarrassing not only to the people of Paris, Texas but to the entire United States. Some who choose to deny the racial bias displayed in this case have been proven wrong when Shaquanda's situation and the plight of other Black students in that county is under federal investigation.
Moreover, Shaquanda was confined to a facility that is now under investigation of sexual abuse by at least one guard. He has since resigned.
Please check the Chicago Tribune for Howard Witt's coverage and update on Shaquanda's release.

6 year-old arrested, handcuffed in Avon Park, Florida
Hanging my head in shame, my home state has gotten in on the act of ridiculous reaction to misbehaving children. The latest publicized episode is the arrest of Desre’e Watson, a six year-old kindergarten student at Avon Park Elementary School in Highlands County. Reports from school officials indicate that the child had a violent run-in with a teacher, threw chairs and even kicked and scratched another teacher that attempted to intervene.
The police were called because the student was violent. Here’s where I think the incident gets out of control. Not only was the student arrested, she was handcuffed, booked on a felony charge and two misdemeanor charges and placed behind bars.
About a year ago there was another episode from Florida that filmed the student’s outburst. Some stations broadcasted an abbreviated version of the incident. Only a few showed the child destroying a portion of the classroom exhibit and standing on the table in the principal’s office. All the while, the teacher and administrator spoke to her in that monotone, supposedly calming voice. It was ridiculous. As soon as the child saw the police, she sat quietly in the principal’s office. Excuse me but that child knew better.
I don’t believe in beating a child but if he or she doesn’t obey after I’ve talked to them, a pop on the behind or on the hand is in order. I love kids. I am my godkids favorite because I allow them to talk about whatever they want to and I act silly with them too. I do not play when it comes to behavior. There are far too many rude people in the world. Proper manners and behavior will take a person far in the world. I do not negotiate with children. I explain the dynamics of our relationship --- I love them but it’s not a democracy. I encourage them to share their opinion and ask questions but when my answer is “because I said so”, that’s where the questioning ends. Kids are exceptionally bright; they get it right away. The extent of my discipline usually ends with “the look”. You know the one that I’m referring to.
In this latest incident we have no way of knowing how this child actually behaved and why. There are far too many unanswered questions. Hopefully the truth will be revealed through an investigation of the incident. Regardless of the outcome, the student will surely need psychological counseling.
Check out this video from CNN.

SHAQUANDA COTTON to be RELEASED!
Initially, I didn’t believe what I’d read. Surely sleep deprivation had kicked in and I’d misread the e-mail in my InBox. ‘Shaquanda Cotton to be Released’. I wiped my eyes and read it two more times. Then I googled Shaquanda’s name. It was true.
Howard Witt of the Chicago Tribune and other international media confirmed it also. Click here to read Howard Witt’s article. So much has happened to this child within the last year but bloggers have proven the power of the internet when used positively.
There have been several comments to my posts that have been refuted in Witt’s article. The federal investigation of Paris, Texas public schools by the Department off Education may expose many more similar atrocities.
Only the weather kept Shaquanda’s mother from reaching her yesterday. I can only imagine how the two of them felt hearing the news and knowing they would be reunited again. I am as full as I write this. All I can do is shed tears of joy.
I’d love to hug Shaquanda and her mother. Shaquanda’s plight has touched so many people. There were so many lessons taught and learned through this situation. The most powerful lesson for me was the demonstration of the power of love and prayer. Thank you to every blogger who played a part in this. I even thank the individuals who felt that Shauanda’s sentence was justified. It’s beneficial to all to hear different perspectives. My position did not change but I respect your right to your views.
Throughout Shaquanda’s ordeal, I was reminded of a poem I had to memorize. It was on of those pledging requirements I experienced while in college but in modern times has most unfortunately been associated with American terrorist Timothy McVeigh.

Diversity Inc covers Shaquanda Cotton's plight
Sentencing a 14-year-old to seven years in prison for shoving a school hall monitor doesn't sound fair. That the girl in question was sentenced by a judge who three months earlier sentenced a 14-year-old white girl convicted of arson to probation seems criminal.
But that's the horrific predicament Shaquanda Cotton faces—seven years in the Texas Youth Commission (TYC). Cotton was convicted of assaulting a public servant because she shoved a 58-year-old hall monitor at Paris High School.
"Race played a major factor in this case because if Shaquanda was a young, white female there is no way they would allow such a heightened charge to go forward," says Gary Bledsoe, an Austin, Texas, attorney and president of the NAACP Texas branch. "Even if you take what the teacher's aide said to be true ... all she said was that Shaquanda lightly pushed her ... you're telling me that's a felony?"
Paris has a bloodied history when it comes to race. The city, with a population of 26,000 (Census 2000 counted 73 percent white, 22 percent black, 4 pecent Latino, 0.95 percent Native American and 0.66 percent Asian American), was the site of several public lynchings of black Americans in the late 1800s and early 1900s.
Paris public schools are also being investigated by the U.S. Education Department following repeated complaints that administrators discipline black students more frequently and harshly than they do white students. U.S. Education Department representatives confirmed an investigation is under way but were unavailable for comment.
Currently, Cotton is being held at TYC, which is also under investigation for sexual and physical abuse of inmates. Moreover, the facility makes clear in its "Family Guide" for relatives of juveniles that "You may have heard about adult prisons, where once you 'do the time,' you go home. It does not work this way at TYC." That's because of TYC's "resocialization" program that the prison says "enhance[s] personal accountability of delinquent youth." Parents of incarcerated youth, however, report that the rule effectively keeps kids in prison indefinitely.
One of the rule's steps is to admit guilt in order to be considered for parole. But Cotton says she was defending herself from being hit by the hall monitor when she shoved her, so she doesn't believe she is guilty.
"She can't go from step one to step two until she admits guilt, so you have to swallow your beliefs or stand up for your principals," says Bledsoe, who added that Cotton's time in TYC has already been extended because she violated a resocialization rule. She had one more pair of socks than is allowed. "We're trying to get them to invalidate the rule," says Bledsoe.
Cotton's mother, Creola, reported that her daughter is in jail because she has protested and filed complaints against the school and police department. Prosecutors argued during the punishment phase of the trial that Creola Cotton is an unfit mother, according to reported a story on the district attorney's web site.
"Shaquanda came from a very structured home. She didn't run around; she didn't get out in the street; she didn't do drugs; she didn't drink alcohol; she didn't do any of those things because I didn't let her," Cotton was quoted as saying in the story. "The only reason that they could give that Shaquanda should be removed from my home is that I filed complaints against the school and the police department. So how does that make me an unfit parent?"
A spokesperson for the district attorney's office, Allan Hubbard, was not available to speak to DiversityInc.com, but in the story that appeared on the district attorney's web site, Hubbard was quoted as saying Cotton's case "is not a racial issue."
"There are people who commit crimes and there are people who do not agree with the way those crimes are handled and the process. This is not a racial issue with this office," Hubbard said in the story. "There will always be people who object to the level that we pursue something for prosecution."
Now Cotton's future rests in the hands of Bledsoe and others who have taken up her cause.

Sanjaya makes the cut --- again!
I have not watched American Idol in a few weeks. I watched a few minutes tonight just to see if Sanjaya got the boot. Surprise, surprise, he was safe; he wasn’t even in the bottom three.
The Sanjaya Malakar phenomenon is amazing. He is obviously not the best performer but has enough of a fan base to escape to yet another week. I understand that there is a campaign to
“Vote for the Worst.” I heard that radio jock Howard Stern has gotten in on the act.
In my opinion, AI producers are using Sanjaya for ratings. There are posts circulating the internet that Simon Cowell says he’ll quit AI if Sanjaya wins. That's sure to earn votes from Simon-haters.
Who’s kidding who? Simon and the other judges could have eliminated Sanjaya during the auditions. There were many more talented individuals that were sent packing during the local auditions. Sanjaya was planned.
I may just vote for Sanjaya next week because AI itself is such a joke.

Okay, now we know that Anna Nicole Smith died from an accidental overdose of a sedative. The medical examiner’s report included details of scarring from cosmetic surgery and an infection due to injections in her buttocks.
How sad this woman’s life must have been. She died in much the same manner as her idol, Marilyn Monroe. Now that her cause of death has been revealed, we’ll be subjected to more details on her lifestyle as the inquisition into her son’s death begins followed by the paternity of her daughter and legal battles over her daughter’s inherited wealth by way of Smith’s late husband Howard Marshall.

Jeb Bush denied honorary degree from UF
In an unprecedented move, faculty senate members indicated that Bush was not a friend to higher education, citing Bush’s initiatives that did more harm than good. The addition of three medical schools and his ‘One Florida’ initiative ending race-based admissions were just three criticisms cited. Bush was denied by a 38-28 vote. Attempting to minimize the controversy and embarrassment of the snub, the UF alumni board passed a resolution awarding Bush honorary alumnus status. That move may have been a good one but it was too late to avoid the negative publicity for UF and Bush.

Life is a Theater: Everyone Can't Be in Your Front Row
This was forwarded to me by my friend Natacha Payen last year. You may have seen it before also. I love its message so I'm sharing with you today...
Everyone Can't Be in Your Front Row
Life is a theater - invite your audience carefully.
Not everyone is holy enough and healthy enough to have a front row seat in our lives.
There are some people in your life that need to be loved from a distance.
It's amazing what you can accomplish when you let go, or at least minimize your time with draining, negative, incompatible, not-going-anywhere relationships – friendships - fellowships!
Observe the relationships around you. Pay attention to:
Which ones lift and which ones lean?
Which ones encourage and which ones discourage?
Which ones are on a path of growth uphill and which ones are going downhill?
When you leave certain people, do you feel better or feel worse?
Which ones always have drama or don't really understand, know and appreciate you and the gift that lies within you?
The more you seek God and the things of God – the more you seek quality, the more you seek not just the hand of God but the face of God -- the more you seek things honorable -- the more you seek growth, peace of mind, love and truth around you, the easier it will become for you to decide who gets to sit in the FRONT ROW and who should be moved to the balcony of your life.
You cannot change the people around you...but you can change the people you are around!
Ask God for wisdom and discernment and choose wisely the people who sit in the front row of your life.

My thoughts on Miss USA 2007
Miss Tennessee, Rachel Renee Smith, was crowned Miss USA 2007 last night in Hollywood, CA. There was a serious attempt to liven up the pageant with funky hip hop music from Kanye West and others. The pageant would have come across as upscale had Kanye performed live.
Nancy O’Dell did an excellent job commentating all while very pregnant. Miss Thang even rocked in high heels; I know her feet must be killing her this morning. Hey, she didn’t fall. She looked fabulous! So nothing else matters. Okay, so I forgot the name of the guy that hosted with Nancy, he was good also. I was pleased that the show ran very quickly; sometimes pageants can be quite boring when you’re viewing at home.
It would be interesting to see the competition during the week. I know most of the men enjoyed the swimsuit competition. I thought most of the semi-finalists looked a little too thin but perhaps it’s a cultural thing. My favorites: Miss Tennessee and Miss Nevada
The evening gowns were very interesting. I forget the name of the contestant that wore a hideous baby blue number with a Greco-roman flair. It was ill-fitting and too revealing. Miss California was definitely a fashion don’t. That black gown with those baby doll cap sleeves was awful. The design was awful too; it looked like a high school sewing project. That dress did nothing to accentuate her beauty --- absolutely nothing. She would have looked better had she worn her hair up also. She’s such a beautiful girl that she still made it to the finals and third runner-up. My favorite gown was definitely Miss Tennessee’s. The color was striking against her golden brown skin tone and it accentuated her figure.
The person I felt the most sympathy for was Miss USA 2006, Tara Conner. I still think it was unfair for Donald Trump to allow her to keep her crown after her ghastly behavior and drug use. I know that she must be relieved today to have another Miss USA in the spotlight. I think Trump used Tara Conner’s predicament to realize viewers for this year’s show.

She did not look her usual self. She looked very used. If she buys bigger boobs, she can be one of Hugh Hefner’s girlfriends. Whoever told her that hairstyle with the straight bangs and blue-green print gown she wore on the show looked nice needs to be shot. Her belly protruded and she didn’t appear to be wearing proper undergarments. Any viewer of Oprah or the Tyra Banks Show knows what I’m referring to. I do hope someone that really loves Tara Conner intervenes before she has a career meltdown.

Thought for the Day: 'Say yes to life'
Say yes more often to life and life will more often say yes to you.
Accept more of the opportunities that come your way and your best possibilities will be more fully realized.
It can be intimidating and uncomfortable to go off in a direction you've never traveled before.
Ultimately, though, the sting of regret for not following an opportunity is much more painful than the discomfort of pushing yourself into unfamiliar territory.
The fullness of life comes to those who choose to truly live it. That choice is presented in every moment as you are exposed to a continuous stream of possibilities.
There's nothing to be gained by seeking to run off in every direction at once. Yet there is much to be gained by following the best of the possibilities that offer themselves to you.
Life's magnificent abundance is experienced by those who are willing to eagerly jump into it. To know great and wonderful things, you must make yourself available to live your way through them.
Choose to say yes a little bit more often. Life's richness and meaning grow as you do.

Old School Technology Overload
OK, I now have an iPod. I didn’t plan on getting one because I could listen to music in my car and on my computer. There’s only so much music listening I can fit in my schedule, right?
Well, enter my job and a 30G iPod. The device is so much more than a means to listen to music. We’re expected to test its boundaries as to how we can use it for our various projects and tasks.
The device comes with a 72-page manual. What? If I need 72 pages to show me how to use it, I’m in big trouble. I’d made a vow not to purchase another techie toy until I learned how to use the advanced features on my CrackBerry, I mean BlackBerry Pearl. I have a CrackBerry for my job, my personal CrackBerry and a digital phone. That’s way too much intrusiveness already.
My iPod is white but covered with a black iSkin. That means the other ten individuals on the team have the same device with the same cover. I immediately put a yellow smiley sticker on mine for identification purposes.
I have to learn to use this for presentations and other ways to communicate with our team more efficiently. I’m ready for the challenge but some of the steps to produce my first presentation will surely be outsourced to my godchildren.

Tagged! Simply Successful Secrets
I've been tagged by Maria! Here is what I’ve been asked to do: Compose a new blog post listing the top 5 to 10 things that you do almost every day that help you to be successful. They can be anything at all, but they have to be things that you do at least 4 or 5 times every week. Anything less than that may be a hobby that helps you out, but we are after the real day in and day out habits that help you to be successful.
This is not the typical tag I’m accustomed to. I thought it would be very easy but it actually required a lot of thought. Here goes.
Success Habits 1. Pray and meditate – this is how I start each day. I must center myself and call on positive forces to help me get through the work day with the least amount of stress.
2. Network – I love to meet new people and connect with those I already know. My online groups, blogs and e-mail buddies are terrific ways to share my ideas and influence decisions made regarding my community.
3. Blog – I blog to help clear my head. Writing is so cathartic. Sometimes my writing is brief and other times I write an awful lot. Writing gets my blood moving and allows me to be successful by connecting with others.
4. Moderate a Yahoo! Group – I started a Yahoo! Group called The Rattlers Den. It is for alumni, students, faculty and friends of my alma mater, Florida A&M University in Tallahassee, Florida. Moderating this group keeps me abreast of University happenings and I can be a better ambassador at the same time.
5. Read – I used to read a lot when I was a child, so much so I’d read by flashlight in bed under the covers. This was a great exercise. You know what I realized from this tag? I realized I need to seriously do more about starting my own business and preparing to retire comfortably in 5 – 10 years.

Thought for the Day: You have this day
Thinking that you are too old, or too young, or too much this, or too little that, is merely a deception you impose upon yourself.
Focus instead on what you can do right now.
This is a moment to take your most highly cherished values and put them into action. This is the day to give life to your dreams.
Right now you have the opportunity to do something with this day. Right now you are in a position to express the beautiful, unique person you are.
No matter what the circumstances may be, the conditions are always right for making a positive contribution in your own special way.
Whatever may have happened before, this moment right now is when you can make a difference.
Consider how truly fortunate you are to be here in this moment. Then get going and make something great out of that good fortune.

FREE SHAQUANDA COTTON – Update #1: Black or White, It's Just Wrong!
As I research Shaquanda’s story, I am more saddened and outraged at the pawn this child has become in an environment that should never have been allowed to thrive in the United States of America in this day and time.
As a 14 year-old high school freshman in Paris, Texas, Shaquanda Cotton shoved a hall monitor that would not allow her to enter the school before its official start time so she could take medication. Shaquanda doesn’t deny shoving the hall monitor, a 58 year-old woman but Shaquanda also says she was shoved first. Please read Howard Witt’s coverage in the Chicago Tribune.
There have been accusations of disparate treatment of Black students and records show very minor citations such as Shaquanda’s wearing a skirt that was an inch shorter than regulations, pouring too much paint in a cup in an art class or defacing a desk that administrators later admitted was not damaged. Many believe Shaquanda was targeted because her mother has been vocal in protests of the Paris, Texas public school system.
Shaquanda Cotton is 15 years-old now. She has attempted suicide. The shoving incident occurred in September 2005. It should not matter that Shaquanda is Black and the hall monitor, white. In a small Texas town that is referred to as a throwback to the 1930s, perhaps Shaquanda is truthful about being shoved first.
Regardless, of the racial spin to this story and the citation of the Paris Fairgrounds as an infamous location for lynching Blacks, a 14 year-old girl was sentenced and may be incarcerated for a long time for a minor offense. Black or white, that’s just wrong!
We send or receive jokes or prayers several times daily on the internet; let’s spread the word of Shaquanda’s plight with equal fervor. By the way, contact Howard Witt and thank him for coverage of Shaquanda’s story. Thus far, The Chicago Tribune is the only major media outlet I've seen that has covered this situation.
Send messages of encouragement!

30,000 Bloggers Needed
There’s a new social networking experiment in the blogosphere called 30,000 Bloggers. The premise is that after 30, 000 bloggers have signed up, all of the bloggers will be given a topic to blog about. The key is that all 30,000 bloggers blog about the same topic on the same day. You know, one loud voice from 30,000 people on the net. It’s brilliant and interesting.
On the QuipSpot blog, the Quipper goes into detail about why the ambitious 30,000 number was chosen. How long will it take to reach 30,000? What will the topic be? Who knows but the quicker you sign up, the quicker we'll all know.
I love the ‘Horton Hears a Who’ spin placed on this project. Check it out, add your name to the list and spread the word. http://quipspot.blogspot.com/2007/03/need-your-help-for-experiment.html

Be on the Look out for Maria on SNL Tonight!
There's a great chance that my blog buddy Maria will be on SNL this evening. Here are the posts from her blog BAAAAHH!. Just think, I actually correspond with a celebrity! :) You never know who's on the other end of the computer. When she becomes super-famous, I can say I knew her when!
Friday, March 16, 2007 SNL update
I just got back from the rehearsal and...well let's just say that is the sketch makes it I will have a lot of air time :D.I can't of course say anything about the sketch, but it's a spoof of the reality show "The Search for the next Pussycat Doll"...we still don't know what we'll be wearing...and I have the feeling that is not gonna be much...sigh...I'm gonna go do some push ups;)
Posted by Maria & Stefano at 3:26PM 1 comments SNL
I got called in again for SNL this weekend.I've already done it three times in the past...it's such an easy job...you go in on Friday, do your rehearsal for your sketch (this time I know mine is about the PussyCat Dolls)...Then you come back on Saturday around 12:00 you do a dress rehearsal, you have a little break, then around 6:00 you start getting ready, hair, makeup, costumes.
At 8:00 they have the first show, with a live audience, where they used all the sketches and it usually lasts until 10:30.
Then you wait half an hour and at 11:00 they come in and they let you know which sketches got cut.At 11:30 with a different audience the show is live on TV.
It's a great environment, everybody is extra nice, very professional and fun to be around.
I never do extra work 'cos I don't like it, but this is the only one I do 'cos it's fast and I get a little bit more money being AFTRA.

So I'll let you know about the rehearsal later today...set your tivos...you might see me...and don't blink or you might miss me hehehe.

Sinbad not dead!
I will no longer use Wikipedia as a source for research. After the latest debacle involving the falsely reported death of comedian Sinbad, it’s just best for me to stay away from that site.
Why someone would vandalize his Wikipedia page and report him dead is beyond me but it just goes to show the caliber of folks on the internet. Hopefully others will let this be a lesson about exaggerations, falsehoods and downright lies that are posted on the internet; especially people who spread hoaxes and urban legends.
If I can’t verify, I don’t forward. Unfortunately, I have used Wikipedia in the past. I wonder if any of that info was false also.
On the flip side to Sinbad’s ‘death,’ he could not have asked for better PR! That may seem crass, but I know I’m not the only one thinking it.

FREE SHAQUANDA COTTON
I didn't want to believe this when I read it but it's true. There was Cory Maye, Genarlow Wilson and now Shaquanda Cotton. I'm sure there are other names that can be added to the list especially considering the death of Martin Lee Anderson here in Florida.
I am biting this post directly from http://ybpguide.com. spread the word about this latest injustice! Go to http://freeshaquandacotton.blogspot.com to leave a message of love and encouragement.
From http://ybpguide.com...
the one thing i love most about reading online is the ability to find little nuggets of information or interesting stories without having to flip through a giant stack of recyclable paper with messy ink. yesterday was no exception when i stumbled upon a story in the tribe (may need free signup) about a small town in texas that seems to relish in its violent racial past.
paris, texas is the home of the Paris Fairgrounds, a stage where thousands of white ’spectators’ would gather to burn and lynch blacks as if at some sort of carnival. today, it is a highly segregated town that has implicity dared anyone to question how it chooses to treat blacks that live in the area.
the facts:
- “black parents have filed at least a 12 discrimination complaints against the school district with the federal Education Department, asserting that their children, who constitute 40 percent of the district’s nearly 4,000 students, were singled out for excessive discipline”
- the paris public schools are under investigation by the U.S. Education Department
- 19-year-old white man, convicted last july of criminally negligent homicide for killing a 54-year-old black woman and her 3-year-old grandson with his truck, was sentenced in Paris to probation
- judge chuck superville sentenced a 14-year-old white girl, convicted of arson for burning down her family’s house, to probation
- a 14-year-old black freshman, shaquanda cotton, shoved a 58-year-old teacher’s aide at paris high school in a dispute over entering the building before the school day had officially begun. she was tried in march 2006 in the town’s juvenile court, convicted of “assault on a public servant” and sentenced by the same judge chuck superville to prison for up to 7 years, until she turns 21
yes, you read that last part right. i’ll let it sink in for a second.
so its 2007, one state is drafting formal legislation to apologize for slavery, and another is trying to flex its ‘dont mess with texas’ ego. while i complained earlier of how dismayed i was that some black blogs tend to be angry, this type of reality justifies that sentiment, and rightfully so. while i’ve never been the most articulate when it comes to expressing the complete shock of ‘in plain view’ racism, i can honestly say that this type of white arrogance and hate needs to be called out and handled swiftly. but how? the article mentions that naacp is on the case (rolling eyes), but i feel like more, MUCH MORE needs to be done.
if you get to the end of the article, the turmoil suffered by shaquanda in juvenile prison, where 95% of the offenders are repeat and violent (read: real crimes), has caused her to attempt suicide on her life 3 times. 3 times! a 14-year old, my little sister, is trying to kill herself because a racist bigot of a judge put her in prison for shoving someone. SHOVING!
so what can be done? link to this article. publicize this story. let’s see what blogging black can really do. go to the governor’s page at http://www.governor.state.tx.us/contact and let him know how you feel and how this is completely bullshit.
free shaquanda cotton. NOW!
i ask that some of my more articulate readers post a statement in the comments that we can all use on the contact form on the texas governor page.
[update 1]: looks like we’re getting the word spread. a fb group has started.

Thought for the Day: View of life
If you want to be miserable, then get yourself around other people who are miserable.
If you wish to be joyful, successful and fulfilled, put yourself around those who live with positive purpose.
The more energy you put into complaining about how bad things are, the more things you'll have to complain about.
The more intensely you visualize how good things can be, the better they will become.
You are naturally drawn to whatever you focus upon. You will see precisely the opportunities and possibilities that you prepare yourself to see.
Each day is filled with so many choices and directions that you cannot possibly connect to them all.
The ones you do connect with are the ones that most closely resonate with your view of life.
Fortunately, you can choose to view life in whatever way you wish. Those who find the best in life are those who continually remind themselves that all the good and valuable things are most certainly there.
See your life as a grand opportunity for love and joy, achievement and fulfillment. And that's exactly what it will be.
-- Ralph Marston

Let him go
Why do people ask your opinion or advice on an issue and then get angry when you tell them because they don’t like what you said? This particularly irks me when it comes to women and their romantic/marital relationships.
We tend to adjust to keep a man. Wear our hair a certain way. Dress a certain way. Get bigger boobs. Whatever. Why? All those moves and even mind-blowing sex won’t keep a man if he doesn’t want to stay. Most of the time, the man’s choice to move on to someone else has nothing to do with us. We women have to learn to just walk away from some guys. Just let it go.
I think that Jennifer Holiday song, And I’m Telling You from Dreamgirls, has screwed up the mentality of many a woman. “I’m staying…I’m staying and you’re gonna love me.” Uh, I don’t think so. How mentally imbalanced is that? As whack as her song is, Beyonce may have it right --- “to the left, to the left, everything you own in a box to the left…I’ll get another you in a minute…” Just let it go.
One of my co-workers sought my advice on problems she’s having with her husband. She says they haven’t made love to each other in over a year. Now before I answered her question, I asked her if she really wanted to hear the truth. She assured me she did.
After a few questions, I found out that he spends quite a bit of time away from home --- more than usual. He finds excuses to not attend church with her as much as he used to but he’s not forgotten important celebration such as her birthday, their anniversary, holidays, etc.
She has tried tempting him sexually but he manages to go to sleep. She cooks, keeps the house immaculate and is still a perfect size 7. Their only child is a teenage daughter who was born before they were married. Until a couple of years ago, they made love at least four or five times a week. Now it has dwindled down to nothing within the last year.
She didn’t want me to be so blunt but I was. Her man still respects her as a person but he is having sex with someone else. How do I know? First of all he’s a man. That’s just how men are wired. Men can have sex without emotional attachment. As much as we women think we can, we need some kind of emotional connection.
Secondly, he’s not dissing her during the special celebrations, especially those with family and friends. He is, however, telling her that he’s working when he’s probably not. She needs to have a heart-to-heart talk with him right away. She’s miserable and there’s no need to be. She needs to find out where he’s really at. She also needs to be prepared to end the relationship if she doesn’t like what he tells her.
If homeboy is not trying to push up on her in bed, something’s definitely wrong. I don’t care what a woman looks like, if you’re sharing a bed with a man, and he’s not gay, he’s going to try something. This dude is not trying anything with her because he’s getting it somewhere else. It’s just that simple.
Women, you can’t force a man to love you. Don’t trip. Don’t blame yourself. If the two of you don’t click, just move on. If he’s having sex with someone else and chooses not to have sex with you also, consider yourself blessed. There are too many STDs out there. Move on.

Lunch with my son
I had lunch with my son yesterday. It was so cool. Other than photos on the computer, I hadn’t seen him in a couple of years. It was so cool. I know it sounds crazy but he looked the same, but different. His curly hair was shaved off and he actually has a beard. OMG! He has definitely matured. I am so proud of him.
He talked so glowingly about his job, his son and wanting to marry his girlfriend. I had to admit that he’s actually a man now. I introduced him to my co-workers. I think I embarrassed him but what are moms for, right?
I am so proud of him. I said that already, right? Wait till I show you pictures of my grandson! Okay, this picture has nothing to do with the post; I just wanted to use it.

I was saddened to learn of the apparent suicide of Richard Jeni, one of the greatest comics of our time.
I often that he was underrated and overlooked. His comedic timing and delivery were always on point.
Jeni’s wit and humor will be missed. May he rest in peace. Ashe'.

Star Jones Reynolds returns to Court TV with new look
Star Jones Reynolds is returning to Court TV with her own show and an even slimmer look. I’m not sure how I feel about this new look. I always preferred Star with a little meat on her bones. What’s important is that things are looking up for Star in spite of her unceremonious release from ABC’s ‘The View.’
She’s also dealing with rumors of husband Al’s homosexuality and the couple’s divorce. Jones Reynolds vehemently denies rumors of the demise of her marriage.
One thing is certain; Star Jones Reynolds is a survivor. She should really blossom by returning to her legal roots. I’m looking forward to her new show. Go Star!
